The U.S. government has officially moved its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem effectively discarding several decades of American foreign policy and a decision met with fatally violent protests alongside the Israeli-Gaza border.

A rising number of Palestinians have been reported dead with an estimated 2,700 severely wounded in Gaza as violent acts of protests were carried out following the ceremony in Jerusalem, marking the deadliest event to occur there since the 2014 Gaza war.

The violence is expected to continue, as Palestinians honor what they call the “Nakba,” or Catastrophe, a memoriam for the 700,000 Palestinians who were removed from their homes during the Arab-Israeli war that accompanied the creation of the state of Israel back in 1948.

This past Monday officially marked the 70th anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel, US and Israeli leaders praised the embassy move as proof of the enduring relationship between the two nations. Experts suggest that it could establish a foundation for an eventual peace agreement between Israelis and Palestinians.

Children were among those killed by the deadly protests, drone strikes from above sent tear gas far beyond the brutal scene at the border.
