As the Western world continues to grapple with the threat of terrorism, something is unfolding this Tuesday right here in the U.S. that should have people worried.
Eight people are reported dead and 15 people are reported wounded after an incident in New York City that the Associated Press is describing as a car ramming attack followed by a shooting. There are reports that the weapon the attacker was seen holding is fake, meaning shots heard on the scene would have come from police.
According to local news outlet PIX-11, a number of individuals who are injured are in critical condition. The total number of reported casualties is going up as time goes on. There is a police briefing set to take place at 5:15 local time.
The AP reports:
‘Police and witnesses say a motorist drove onto a busy bicycle path near the World Trade Center memorial and struck several people, then emerged from the vehicle screaming and firing something that appeared to be a gun.’
Besides hitting several people, the truck also hit an apparent two other vehicles. An AP photographer personally witnessed two bodies lying motionless under tarps, while a person who was in the area at the time of the incident told the AP that he “saw several bleeding people on the ground after a truck struck several people.”
The most recent high profile terror incident to occur within the U.S. was the mass shooting some weeks ago at a country music festival in Las Vegas. At that festival, hundreds upon hundreds of people were shot, with nearly 60 deaths.
The NYPD reported on Twitter that one person was in custody, but their identity has not been revealed to the public as of yet.
The president has yet to chime in on Twitter about this incident, although such is all the better considering that his solution to the threat of incidents like this consists of imposing racist travel bans.
According to sources, the suspect yelled “Allahu Akbar” on the scene.
ABC is reporting that the FBI and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo are both involving themselves in the investigation.
