On Saturday, President Donald Trump stated that both he and his generals “would love” to have a military parade; and his comment came during an interview on Fox News with Jeanine Pirro. (See video below)
Earlier this year, it was reported that President Trump had asked the Pentagon to go about planning for a military parade. Once military officials finally confirmed that the event was actually being considered and was in fact, in its early planning stages, the idea was met with immediate backlash from lawmakers in Congress.
A recent poll from the Military Times actually found that 89 percent of its readers (which consists primarily of service members and their families), are opposed to the idea of the military parade, and have contended that it would be a “waste of money.”
Concerns have been raised by the Pentagon and other officials over the logistics of the event, such as how it would ultimately have to be funded, and whether or not Washington, D.C. streets and infrastructure would be able to withstand the heavy weight of such things as military tanks, if they are part of the parade. Mick Mulvaney, the White House budget director, has conveyed to lawmakers that the parade would cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $30 million.
Democrats and Republicans who are opposed to the parade have contended that a military demonstration of such magnitude could send the wrong message and possibly portray the United States in a “totalitarian” light. Russia and North Korea are notorious for their large-scale military demonstrations – something that most find unsettling.
On Saturday, Trump said that “a lot of” the parade would be comprised of flyovers, and that it would pay tribute to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, as well as the Coast Guard Academy.
“It would be a great representative parade,” the president said. “It would be great for the spirit of the country. We have a great country. And we should be celebrating our country.”
Do you think spending so much money on a military parade will benefit the United States, at all?
