On Monday, during a speech in Ohio about the GOP tax plan, Trump insisted that Democrats who didn’t clap for him during his State of the Union address are “treasonous.” (See video below)
He stated, “Can we call that treason? Why not?” Trump said during a speech about the GOP tax plan in Ohio. “They certainly didn’t seem to love our country very much.”
On Tuesday, Rep Andy Biggs (R-AZ) defended Trump’s comments while he was on Fox News. Briggs stated that Trump “may have been a bit hyperbolic.” He then described the Democrats’ refusal to clap as “disrespectful.”
Biggs added, “In the end, they might have some ‘splaining to do when they meet God.”
Fox Business host Stuart Varney then chimed in and stated, “Some ‘splaining to do at the Pearly Gates, I like that one!”
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders also tried defending Trump’s comments saying that he was “clearly joking“.
Re @POTUS calling Democrats “treasonous,” White House @PressSec Sarah Sanders says, “He was clearly joking. He was making the point that even when good things are happening they are still sitting there angry.”

This isn’t the first time Sanders claimed Trump was joking about a serious issue. She also said Trump “was making a joke” when he gave a speech to law enforcement and encouraged them to be more physically forceful.
