Jeff Sessions just fired back at Trump: DOJ won’t ‘be improperly influenced’

Attorney General Jeff Sessions released a combative statement this Thursday saying that the Justice Department “will not be improperly influenced by political considerations.”

In his most oppositional stance against President Trump, Sessions defended his leadership of the Justice Department, which recently was criticized by the president and his allies.

“While I am Attorney General, the actions of the Department of Justice will not be improperly influenced by political considerations. I demand the highest standards, and where they are not met, I take action,” Sessions argued in a fiery response to Trump’s most recent interview on Fox News.

“However, no nation has a more talented, more dedicated group of law enforcement investigators and prosecutors than the United States,” Sessions stated.

Sessions’ statement followed after President Trump blasted the attorney general once more, during an interview with Fox News, for rescuing himself from matters linked to the Russian probe.

Trump also lashed out against the Justice Department in no uncertain terms.

“Even my enemies say that, ‘Jeff Sessions should have told you he was going to recuse himself, and then you wouldn’t have put him in,’” Trump detailed in an interview that aired Thursday.

Trump also insisted that he had only selected Sessions to be his top law enforcement officer because of his “loyalty” during his 2016 campaign.

“He was on the campaign. You know, the only reason I gave him the job was because I felt loyalty,” Trump said. “He was an original supporter.”

Trump has repeatedly fired shots at Sessions and the Justice Department over special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe, which he views as a political “witch hunt” improperly centered on him.
