Paul Ryan: Puerto Rico Needs To Learn To Stand On It Own Two Feet (Video)

This morning, Trump peeled back yet another layer of his putrid skin, offering a glimpse at the rotten, racist heart beating at his core. He took to Twitter to launch another attack on the people of Puerto Rico, who are still struggling to get potable water and electricity running after Hurricane Maria ravaged their island. The idea that Trump would pull what literal federal aid he’s given to Puerto Rico is horrifying. The territory needs more help, not less and it’s disingenuous and sinister to pretend that the hurricane damage has anything to do with Puerto Rico’s preexisting debt. It is crucial to note that Trump has not mentioned ending relief efforts in Texas and Florida, presumably because they have large white populations.

Now, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) has waded into the racist quagmire, throwing some tepid, yet no less grotesque, support behind Trump’s comments during his weekly press conference, held today.

Ryan was asked to respond to Trump’s tweets, and he replied with annoyance that he hadn’t seen them. The reporter read them aloud so the Speaker can respond.

Ryan started by saying that Puerto Rico is experiencing a humanitarian crisis, and that relief efforts are necessary, but then quickly pivoted to ‘Trumpian’ talking points about debt and the Puerto Rican economy.

“Yes, we need to make sure that Puerto Rico can begin to stand on its own two feet. They’ve already had tough fiscal problems, to begin with. You’ve heard me talk about the PROMESA legislation that’s now in law. We’ve got to do more to help Puerto Rico rebuild its own economy so that it can be self-sufficient,” Ryan said.
