Pope Francis has hardly kept his criticism about Donald Trump a secret, and what he just did for the Christmas holiday is no exception. It seems that whenever Trump is high off of his underserved ‘accomplishments’, the Pope always comes through to take him down a few notches and remind Christians – many of whom voted for Trump – just how much their president goes against their values.
Pope Francis is hands down the most politically involved Pope the Catholic faith has ever had, and he’s brilliant for it. What he did earlier today, Christmas Eve, is a brutal reminder that America needs to stay true to its values and remain compassionate, even as a Republican-dominated Congress threatens to push the country in the exact opposite direction.
While speaking at St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis spoke in front of thousands and pretty much ruined Trump’s entire weekend by once again opposing Trump’s immigration ban. Putting a brutal end to Trump’s high after he passed his disastrous GOP tax plan, Pope Francis urged Christians to respect immigrants and welcome them during Christmas Eve mass. The pontiff said:
“So many other footsteps are hidden in the footsteps of Joseph and Mary. We see the tracks of entire families forced to set out in our own day. We see the tracks of millions of persons who do not choose to go away, but driven from their land, leave behind their dear ones… This is the joy that we tonight are called to share, to celebrate and to proclaim. The joy with which God, in his infinite mercy, has embraced us pagans, sinners and foreigners, and demands that we do the same.”
Pope also asked his audience to reach out and love those who are on “the edges of society”. He said:
“Everything about them generated mistrust. They were men and women to be kept at a distance, to be feared.”
That’s a far cry from the treatment Trump and the GOP have been spreading throughout the country as they move to improve things for the wealthy and ignore the middle class, minorities, and pretty much anyone who isn’t a rich, white, conservative male. This was the perfect end-of-year message to remind America that Trump is not living up to the country’s values and that he has treated those who are struggling like dirt.
Trump has ruined Christmas (and 2017 as a whole) for many Americans. We are glad that Pope Francis found a way to kill Trump’s Christmas – with kindness.
