It was recently released that Special Counsel Robert Mueller subpoenaed the Trump campaign over a month ago and we didn’t find out until a couple of days ago.
This is yet another indication that Mueller is leaps ahead of where the public thought the investigation was. It is also proof that Mueller is in fact going after Trump himself and not just his minions.
Now Mueller has requested several documents from the Department of Justice in relation to the firing of FBI Director James Comey and Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ decision to recuse himself. The ABC News report suggests that Mueller is going after Trump for obstruction of justice, but it also strongly implies he’s going after Jeff Sessions as well.
In particular, Mueller’s investigators are keen to obtain emails related to the firing of FBI Director James Comey and the earlier decision of Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from the entire matter, according to a source who has not seen the request but was told about it.
Issued within the past month, the directive marks the special counsel’s first records request to the Justice Department, and it means Mueller is now demanding documents from the department overseeing his investigation.
Mueller’s investigators now seek not only communications among Justice Department staffers but also any of their communications with White House officials, the source said. Before this request, investigators asked former senior Justice Department officials for information from their time at the department, ABC News was told.
Mueller hasn’t had to subpoena the records, so the DOJ is cooperating thus far but Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will be the one cooperating. Sessions will have no control over what he hands over, so Rosenstein – who appointed Robert Mueller – very well could be handing over all the evidence Mueller still needs.
Mueller is going to look under every rock for evidence to pursue criminal charges against Trump. The fact that he is now working with the DOJ means he’s that much closer to getting what he needs. Trump’s time in the White House is getting shorter by the second.
