On Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova has accused the US of “direct interference in our electoral process and internal affairs.”
This accusation comes after the State Department criticized Russia for preventing Alexey Navalny from running against Vladamir Putin in their upcoming election.
In a statement, a representative of the State Department expressed concern over the “ongoing crackdown against independent voices, from journalists to civil society activists and opposition politicians.”
The representative also urged Russia to “hold genuine elections that are transparent, fair, and free and that guarantee the free expression of the will of the people, consistent with its international human rights obligations.”
The European Union’s foreign service also spoke out against barring Navalny stating that it “casts a serious doubt on political pluralism in Russia and the prospect of democratic elections next year.”
However, Zakharova took to Facebook to push back saying,”And these people expressed outrage over alleged Russian ‘interference’ in their electoral process for an entire year?!”
She continued, “The funniest thing is that these are the same people who just tagged RT and Sputnik as foreign agents, who are harassing Russian media around the world and who are investing huge amounts of money into ‘countering Russian propaganda,’ which is how they label anyone who they disagree with.”
According to declassified U.S. intelligence, Russia had meddled in the 2016 U.S. presidential election even though Putin continues to deny the allegations.
Trump also continues to push back on the intelligence of Russia interference.
