When a real military hero is faced with an untenable situation their true character shines. Today Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) showed her character by calling out the lack of character that our draft-dodging Commander-In-Chief regularly displays.
It was this self-serving tweet from Donald Trump that inspired Senator Duckworth to respond so forcefully that the President would still be reeling from the blow if he actually cared about his duties or took his job seriously.
Senator Duckworth, a former U.S. Army helicopter pilot who left the service at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, is an Iraqi war veteran who lost both legs in combat, so she is particularly attuned to the needs of our military. She tweeted her angry response to Trump’s deeply offensive accusation with a confidence based on her far superior military experience.
Her tweet was an excerpt from an even more fiery speech on the Senate floor where she criticized Trump’s lame excuse for his lack of military service with a contempt that only a disabled veteran who has sacrificed her ambulatory abilities for her country can wield toward our spoiled rich brat of a President.
“I spent my entire adult life looking out for the wellbeing, the training, the equipping of the troops for whom I was responsible,” Duckworth said. “Sadly, this is something the current occupant of the Oval Office does not seem to care to do.”
“I will not be lectured about what our military needs by a five deferment draft dodger, and I have a message for Cadet Bone Spurs: If you cared about our military, you’d stop baiting Kim Jong-un into a war that could put 85,000 American troops and millions of innocent civilians in danger.”
That, Mr. President, is what a real military hero sounds like. It’s something you’ll never have the qualifications for.
