This is ‘unpresidential’…

In a speech reeking of condescension, Trump spoke to farmers in Nashville, Tennessee today at the American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual convention. There, he took the opportunity to heap praise upon himself and – in a moment that was almost a caricature of itself – suggest that the farmers are lucky that he gave them the opportunity to vote for him.

“We’re streamlining regulations that have blocked cutting edge biotechnology, setting free our farmers to innovate, thrive, and grow. Oh, are you happy you voted for me. You are so lucky that I gave you that privilege. The other choice wasn’t going to work out too well for the farmers, I hate to tell you… or the miners, or anybody else.”

While Trump has touted his accomplishments to blue collar Americans, they have still yet to materialize. Thus far, the passage of the Republican tax plan will ensure that high-income Americans will garner the most benefits from the tax cuts, while low-income Americans will ultimately end up paying more in taxes than before.

Trump has even gone so far as to flaunt the “benefits” of repealing the estate tax for “small businesses and the American farmer” during a speech in Indianapolis on September 27th. This particular tax of about 40 percent only applies to estates worth more than $5.49 million. Only a few thousand ultrawealthy households in the entire United States will have estates big enough to file an estate tax return each year. Not only was his speech misleading, then, but decidedly condescending.

Trump may present himself as a “populist,” but not only do his policies actually hurt blue collar Americans, he patronizes them as if they won’t.
